History of Miami Beach

  • Miami Beach was originally inhabited by the Tequesta and Seminole Native Americans. Before 1912, the area was mostly a mangrove swamp, where many growers unsuccessfully attempted to establish coconut plantations.

  • Real estate development in Miami Beach was pioneered by John Collins, Carl Fisher, John Lummus, and James Lummus. Their efforts paved the way for the construction of a bridge across the bay, eventually followed by a causeway in 1920.

  • Miami Beach was officially incorporated in 1915, and was originally named Ocean Beach. Its name was changed to Miami Beach the following year.

  • During the 1920s, Miami Beach was developed as a site designed for affluent industrialists looking for a place to build their winter homes. To accommodate the influx of tourists, a number of grand hotels were constructed, including The Flamingo Hotel, The Floridian, Roney Plaza Hotel, The Fleetwood Hotel, and The Nautilus.
